Objectives: The general objective of the essay is to verify how the information economy benefits from the tools of Industry 4.0. The secondary objectives are to map the main digital platforms used for the dissemination of industrial information quickly and on a large scale and to identify the economic advantages used by companies within industry 4.0.
Methodology/approach: The instrumentation for collecting information in this essay was based on a bibliographic and referential survey in the areas of (i) Information Economics, (ii) Industry 4.0, and (iii) Business Digitization.
Main results: The main results demonstrate that solutions such as big data, data science and artificial intelligence can corroborate expanding the multiplier effects of the Information Economy.
Theoretical and methodological contributions: The theoretical contribution is given by highlighting for the seminal research, the information flows established in the new business platforms contemplated in Industry 4.0. Methodologically, the essay helps to bring to light new perspectives on how the information economy can contribute to the advancement of Industry 4.0, exploring unpaved paths in the literature of information, economic and social sciences.
Relevance and originality: The relevance of this essay is to point out platforms that provide solutions for information economy, paving the field of study for further analysis. It also aims to present new possibilities of theoretical tools for Industry 4.0 and to frame the phenomenon in the field of study of economics and administration.
